Rural General Practitioners Medical Indemnity Insurance Program

The VMIA's Rural GP Medical Indemnity Insurance Program is supported by the Department of Human Services (DHS) and reviewed annually in conjunction with DHS and the Rural Doctors Association of Victoria.

The program provides an extensive Medical Indemnity Insurance Cover for GPs and Registrars who are practicing in the rural regions of Victoria and have admission rights to a rural Victorian public hospital or bush nursing hospital as designated by DHS.

For medical practitioners wishing to apply for coverage under the VMIA Rural General Practitioners Medical Indemnity Insurance Program, please contact Monia Choudhary, Insurance Advisor at the VMIA on (03) 9270 6929 or email m.choudhary@vmia.vic.gov.au

Student Indemnity Template

Attached you will find a Student Indemnity Template (see below) designed to capture the indemnity and insurance arrangements in place between a university, college of advanced education and the like and a Victorian Public Hospital.

The essence of the template is that the university, its staff and students placed in accordance with a formal education/training arrangement with a public healthcare provider will be indemnified for any claim made in respect of “loss, damage to property or personal injury which arises out of any act, error or omission (including negligence) whilst doing clinical or any other work whilst under their placement with a public healthcare provider (insured under the VMIA PHP)".

Use of this template will ensure that university staff & students working with public healthcare providers are covered under the PHP and that your organisation is not exposed to uninsured risks. Your educational partners should also recognise the considerable value and saving afforded by this cover under the program. The document is a template and as such modifications will be inevitable. Where such modifications are "material" then please discuss them with your designated Client Service Executive. Note however, that our experience has been that after discussing the clauses with a number of universities and legal advisors that amendments are generally not required.

Claims

It is most important that claims or incidents that could give rise to a claim are notified promptly, so that the appropriate action can be quickly implemented to ensure that all claims are considered on an equitable and prompt basis. If an incident involves serious injury, significant financial loss or other major consequences, you should consider seeking legal advice before submitting information on-line. Legal counsel can then consider the application of legal privilege.

If you wish to advise us of an incident you may use our Incident Notification Form.
