Clinical Risk Management Stategy
The VMIA’s clinical risk management strategy is one of a number of business strategies supporting the achievement of the 2007 – 2010 Corporate Plan. The primary objective of the strategy is to contribute to improved patient safety in Victorian public hospitals through the identification and mitigation of circumstances that put patients at risk of harm. A key focus for the VMIA is to address the factors that contribute to medical indemnity (MI) claims.
Role of VMIA
The role of the VMIA, as outlined in the clinical risk management strategy, is designed to:
- provide a leadership role, as appropriate, in initiatives to improve patient safety in Victorian public hospitals.
- enhance and support the existing clinical governance frameworks within health networks and the broader healthcare sector.
- support improved hospital performance through the recording, analysis and reporting of clinical incidents.
- support the development and implementation of a clinical risk management training strategy for health professionals.
- support the establishment of a centre of excellence in an agreed priority area related to improved patient safety e.g. national benchmarking.
Objectives of the strategy
The objectives of the strategy include the following:
- Seek input from DHS and key stakeholders regarding a leadership role for the VMIA in patient safety.
- Seek input from key stakeholders to determine the most appropriate methodology for the development of a clinical risk management education framework for health professionals. Program emphasis to be on the medical profession at all levels.
- Develop a Health Risk Framework Quality Review (RFQR) review process for health services that includes tools and templates to support the implementation of the Health RFQR.
- Improve the quality, frequency and analysis of incident reporting in a manner that improves health services’ focus on patient safety.
- Work collaboratively with state and federal key stakeholders to promote and ensure a strategic and sustainable response to improving clinical risk management structures, systems and processes across the Victorian public healthcare sector.
- Offer an improved level of medical indemnity insurance and claims management service.
