The January 2021 edition of Future Leaders Communiqué covers how communication and continuity in the healthcare system affects mental health care accessibility. The edition covers Melanie Tregonning’s case, whose case was “lost in a labyrinth of miscommunication and redirection” and her death was found to have been preventable. The commentaries provide strong recommendations to junior practitioners, that include:

  • in escalation of care
  • seeking collaborative history from previous presentations,
  • having each health care professional accountable and responsible for the mitigation of suicide risk
  • The ISBAR is also referenced as a tool for clinicians to support information transfer and communication between professionals.

The collective recommendations and findings from the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System will see an enhanced system to better support mental health care patients.
