The importance of open disclosure as a key driver of delivering better patient care should be recognised at all levels of health services.

Austin Health Chief Medical Officer Dr Fergus Kerr spoke at an Open Disclosure Forum hosted by the Department of Health and Human Services and supported by VMIA.

“We empower our staff to feel confident at all levels where open disclosure is a natural part of delivering safe, high-quality health care,” Dr Kerr said.

“The senior leaders need to model good behaviour and good practices in open disclosure.”

Dr Kerr recommended involving junior staff in training and development alongside senior professionals, so that they can learn the best way to integrate open disclosure successfully in their clinical practice.
