As the State’s insurer and risk adviser, we work with our healthcare partners and hospitals to reduce the risk of harm to patients in Victoria’s healthcare system. This keeps patients safer, but it also means that health services have more resources for looking after patients and managing risks effectively. VMIA’s BPSS 2020-2024 is about working with our system partners to achieve two goals:

  • Reduce the risk of harm to patients in Victoria’s healthcare system
  • More resources for looking after patients and managing risks effectively.

First implemented in 2015, the BPSS has resulted in significant reductions in medical indemnity claims in some clinical services.

Since the BPSS was introduced, a number of changes have occurred in the Victorian health care risk and insurance landscapes, including the establishment of Safer Care Victoria and Victorian Agency for Health Information.

In 2019, VMIA invited proposals to refresh the BPSS to reflect the updated internal and external health, insurance and risk landscape in Victoria.
